Lumen, Kelvin and Fittings explained
What does Lumen mean?
Lumen indicates how much light a lamp gives. More lumens means a brighter light; less lumens means a weaker light. With lumens you can choose the strength of the light you want.
If you do not have a dimmer switch and therefore cannot adjust the brightness of your lights, it is important to look at the number of lumens per lamp. If you do have a dimmer or dimmer switch and you can adjust the brightness, you do not have to worry about how many lumens your lights are, because you can adjust it yourself with the dimmer.
So if you don't have a dimmer switch and are looking for light that enhances the atmosphere in the room, you'd better go for a lamp with less than 100 lumens, otherwise the light can quickly become too bright. Especially if your pendant lamp contains more than 3 light sources.
What is Kelvin?
The color temperature indicates how warm or cold the light appears.
Color temperature is expressed in the unit Kelvin (K). The higher the Kelvin number, the “colder” the light. The lower the Kelvin number, the “warmer” and more yellow/orange the light becomes.
For example, above you can see that 1000 Kelvin provides a warm and pleasant appearance that is comparable to a fireplace.
A lamp with 100 lumens and 1000 Kelvin will therefore provide a pleasant warm atmosphere that will enhance the appearance of the room.
A lamp or light source with 300 lumens and 8000 Kelvin is bright and white, comparable to a construction lamp, so it is mainly functional light.
Conclusion
Do you have a dimmer or switch in your home that allows you to control the brightness? Then you only need to focus on finding a lamp with the right Kelvin value. For a pleasant atmosphere, look for a light source with a value of 500-1500 Kelvin.
If you don't have a dimmer or switch in your home, you should also consider what amount of Lumen you find suitable for the space you are trying to illuminate. Our advice would be to choose a light source with less than 125 Lumen and a Kelvin value between 500-1500. In our experience, normal warm white is not always conducive to atmosphere and you are better off with very warm white light sources.
If you have purchased a few different light sources, leave them on for at least 24 hours (morning and evening) to be able to judge whether they give the desired look both during the day and in the evening.
